American University of the Caribbean (AUC)’s long-standing Community Action Day is a celebration of service, learning, and community collaboration.

Fifty years ago, the percentage of MD graduates who were women hovered around just 10% in the United States, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Since Community Action Day was established at AUC in 2008, it has served as a way for the university to collaborate with local organizations on projects benefiting the people and communities of Sint Maarten.
As a developmental behavioral pediatrician (DBP), Dr. Silvia Pereira-Smith fills a critical role in caring for her young patients with autism, ADHD, and other learning and behavioral disorders. Demand for these types of pediatricians in the United States far outweighs the supply.
The Class of 2017 AUC School of Medicine graduate remembers being on a night shift in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) back in March when she encountered her first patient with the novel coronavirus—a 19-year-old female.
