AUC medical sciences students from the UK Track in Preston, Lancashire, have had three abstract submissions accepted for the Association of Medical Educators (AMEE) Annual Conference in Basel, Switzerland, in August.
The abstracts cover a project in which students are each allocated a volunteering patient who has a long-term condition. Students get to know their patient with regular meetings, mostly remote, and also by accompanying the patient in-person to their healthcare appointments. The partnering of patient with medical student spans three or more years and gives a unique insight for the student to appreciate the nuances of managing many of the key aspects of caring for someone with a chronic disorder such as diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, HIV, multiple sclerosis and many other conditions.
AUC started this ground-breaking initiative in 2023. In turn, participating patients have found this to be a worthwhile experience, illustrating the value of involving patients in medical education.
